A 30-day breakup plan: one small step a day

Thirty days is long enough to change how you feel and short enough to start today. One small task a day, in four stages.

Thirty small paper leaves in rows, the last one an orange flower

A 30-day breakup plan gives each day one small, doable task, so you are not left with empty evenings and their profile. Days 1 to 7 are about surviving (No Contact, sleep, support), days 8 to 15 about understanding what happened, days 16 to 23 about rediscovering yourself, and days 24 to 30 about rebuilding a life that is yours.

The short version

  • Do the day's task, then you are done. Small and daily beats big and rare.
  • Keep No Contact alongside the plan: it is the ground everything else grows in.
  • Skipped a day? Pick up where you left off. This is not a test.
  • By day 30 you will not be "over it", but you will be steadier, with proof.

How to use this plan

Read only today's task. Each one takes between two and twenty minutes. Keep a notebook or use a journal app for the writing tasks. Pair the plan with the No Contact rule: no messages, no checking, for all 30 days.

Days 1 to 7: Survive

  1. Day 1: Write the date

Write down the date it ended and the date No Contact starts. Mute and archive their chat.

  2. Day 2: Tell one person

Tell one friend or family member what happened and ask them to be your "text me instead" person.

  3. Day 3: The basics

Eat one proper meal, drink water, go outside for ten minutes. That is the whole task.

  4. Day 4: Clear your feeds

Unfollow or mute your ex and anyone who posts about them. Put photos in a hidden album.

  5. Day 5: Your urge plan

Write three things you will do instead of texting them. Keep the list on your phone.

  6. Day 6: Sleep

Charge your phone outside the bedroom tonight.

  7. Day 7: Look back

Write one sentence about the hardest moment this week and how you got through it.

Days 8 to 15: Understand

  1. Day 8: The real story

Write what happened in the relationship as if telling a kind friend. Facts, not blame.

  2. Day 9: Reality check

List ten things that were not working. Read the list when you start missing them.

  3. Day 10: What you needed

Write what you needed in the relationship that you did not get.

  4. Day 11: The unsent letter

Write a letter to your ex and do not send it. See our unsent letter guide.

  5. Day 12: Your part

Gently note one thing you would do differently. Not to punish yourself: to learn.

  6. Day 13: Patterns

Is this relationship similar to past ones? Write any pattern you notice.

  7. Day 14: Rest

No task. Do something kind for yourself.

  8. Day 15: Halfway

Read your notes from day 1. Write one way you are different now.

Days 16 to 23: Rediscover

  1. Day 16: Old you

List five things you loved doing before the relationship.

  2. Day 17: Do one

Do one of them, even for fifteen minutes.

  3. Day 18: Reconnect

Message a friend you have not seen in a while.

  4. Day 19: New place

Go somewhere you have never been with your ex: a café, a park, a street.

  5. Day 20: Body

Move for twenty minutes in a way you enjoy.

  6. Day 21: Your space

Change one thing at home: move furniture, add a plant, swap the bedding.

  7. Day 22: Values

Write three things that matter most to you right now.

  8. Day 23: Gratitude

Write three things that were good today, however small.

Days 24 to 30: Rebuild

  1. Day 24: Boundaries

Write the boundaries you want in your next relationship, or with your ex if you must stay in touch.

  2. Day 25: A plan

Plan one thing to look forward to in the next month.

  3. Day 26: Routines

Choose one small daily routine to keep after day 30.

  4. Day 27: Letter to future you

Write to yourself six months from now.

  5. Day 28: Let go of an object

Return, donate or box up one thing that keeps pulling you back.

  6. Day 29: Thank you

Thank the people who helped you this month.

  7. Day 30: Look how far

Read your day 1 notes again. Write what you would tell someone on their day 1.

After day 30

Thirty days is not a finish line. Most people keep No Contact going to 60 or 90 days, or longer. Keep your daily routine, keep writing on hard days, and expect a few waves around anniversaries and holidays. Read about how long No Contact should last to decide what comes next.

Questions people ask

Does 30 days of No Contact work?

Thirty days is long enough for many people to feel a real difference: fewer urges, better sleep, more headspace. It rarely ends the hurt completely, so many people continue past 30 days.

What if I break No Contact during the 30 days?

Note it, think about what set it off, and carry on with the next day of the plan. You do not have to start over from day 1.

Can I do the 30-day plan in an app?

Yes. Lumi's 30-day Journey follows the same four stages, with one short task a day and the first three days free.
